A boat captain who abandoned ship when the dive boat Conception caught fire in 2019, which killed 34, learned he will spend four years in prison this week. The judge handed down the sentence for Jerry Boylan, who is 70, after an LA jury found him guilty of one count of negligence as a ship officer, an offense often referred to as “seaman’s manslaughter.” The fire broke out in September of 2019 on Labor Day off the coast of Ventura County when the Santa Barbara-based boat was anchored off Santa Cruz Island in Platts Harbor. One crew member and all 33 passengers on the lower decks were killed in the fire.
